Roberto is an expert in multilingual Natural Language Processing (including: multilingual word sense disambiguation and entity linking, open information extraction, ontology learning and large-scale multilingual knowledge acquisition). He is the creator of BabelNet (http://babelnet.org), the largest multilingual semantic network and encyclopedic dictionary, covering 272 languages and 14 million concepts and named entities. He is the recipient of a 1.3 million euro ERC Starting Grant on multilingual word sense disambiguation, which - beyond BabelNet - led to the development of the Babelfy state-of-the-art disambiguation system (http://babelfy.org).

Roberto is one of the few Europeans to have received two prestigious ERC grants in computer science (in 2010, an ERC Starting Grant and, in 2016, an ERC Consolidator Grant) for a total of 2.8 million euros.
