Data Science Lab is a research group at Ghent University, Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, Department of Electronics and Information Systems. The Data Science Lab is also part of iMinds, a Flemish research institute with over 850 researchers in the domain of information and communication technology. The Data Science Lab research group consists of 12 staff members (professors), 9 senior researchers (post-docs) and about 60 doctoral students. The research focuses on machine learning; data mining, modeling and visualization; multimedia processing; knowledge and reasoning; coding and information theory; and robotics and control. The Data Science Lab has world-leading expertise in the entire data value chain, from data acquisition, storage, representation and coding, to mining and learning from data, and finally valorization. Reflecting this, we are engaged in a wide range of activities, including fundamental/basic research, applied research, and contract-based research as well as consultancy for industrial partners.
Data Science Lab has a long standing experience in speech & language technology. Our speech technology expertise includes acoustic feature extraction, speech synthesis, speech recognition, and pathological speech assessment. In collaboration with KU Leuven, we developed our own speech recognition toolkit called SPRAAK, which can be used both for research and for product development. The work on speech processing resulted in over 150 papers. Our language technology expertise includes semantic analysis and modern deep neural network based techniques for sentiment extraction from texts.
