Peter Spyns has obtained a MA in Romance Philology, a MSc in Computer Science and PhD in Informatics (1996) at the K.U. Leuven on the topic of medical language processing for Dutch. He has worked from 1989 successively as a junior researcher at the University Hospital of Leuven and the University Hospital of Ghent, both times at the Division of Medical Informatics. In 1996, he joined Lernout & Hauspie Speech Products and worked for the Speech Dialogue Team. Later on (2002), Peter became a senior researcher at the Department of Computer Science (STAR Lab) at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel where he worked on projects in the area of the Semantic Web, knowledge engineering, and ontology learning and evaluation. Since 2006, he works for the Flemish department of Economy, Science and Innovation, with human language technology and digital humanities in his portfolio, next to his current main task of coordinator of international policy. From 2006 till 2013, Peter was seconded to the Dutch Language Union as a programme coordinator for the joint Flemish-Dutch R&D programme on human language technology for Dutch called STEVIN.
