Personal Bio

Dr. Christoph Schmidt is Deputy Head of Department "NetMedia" and Head of Business Unit "Speech Technologies" at the Fraunhofer Institute for Intelligent Analysis and Information Systems (IAIS).

He has studied computer science at RWTH Aachen University and earned a doctoral degree from the Chair of Professor Hermann Ney on the topic of machine translation.

His research topics are automatic speech recognition, speech dialogue systems and large language models for text and audio data, particularly for the media industries.

Christoph Schmidt has led the efforts at Fraunhofer IAIS to provide the German public broadcasters ARD (including all regional programmes) and ZDF with AI-based speech technologies such as automatic speech recognition, speaker recognition and speaker diarization, and to integrate these technologies into existing archive systems for TV and Radio.

Fraunhofer IAIS has also supported several German State parliaments (e.g. Saxony) with live transcription services to provide accessibility to deaf and hard-of-hearing people.

Current research topics of Christoph Schmidt include the application of generative AI to the media industries and journalism.

PSM is a very critical and demanding domain when it comes to tools and applications based on Language Technologies. The session will give an inside view on actual use-cases for LI at public service media in Austria and Germany, combined with overviews on current developments in the field at the Austrian Press Agency and by Fraunhofer IAIS, who developed solutions currently in use at ORF and ARD.
